6fish paintings
The paintings are categorised by size. Each category is listed with the most recent work first. There are three categories, small, medium and large. All of the paintings have been produced between 2004 and 2006.
During 2004 I worked on a series of paintings that were basically just ideas one after another exploring themes such as balance, geometry, patterns, symbolism and natural forms. They only had one element consistent between them and that was the canvas size. They were the starting point for my current work.
During 2005 I became more focused about the ideas I had generated the year before and began to develop a language of my own, although interestingly enough not original. After producing a series of paintings which I called “Chimene” a friend informed me I was painting Mandalas and I had to concede after looking at some mandalas that he was right. These paintings were not pictures of the cosmos (mandalas can be interpreted this way) but certainly a kind of visual meditation.
At the beginning of 2006 I began a process of deconstruction of these meditations and the resulting work is freed from their constraints. The new work is abstract expressionist in style with a formal structure. The formal structure acts like glue to hold together differing expressionistic techniques in one painting. In order to help me explain what my paintings are about I describe them as “formal abstract expressionism”.
